Los coquíes de Puerto Rico son importantes por razones ecológicas y culturales. El coquí es el símbolo de Puerto Rico tanto fuera como dentro de la Isla. Para los puertorriqueños, son una parte importante de nuestro patrimonio natural y cultural. Sin embargo, el público común conoce muy poco sobre estos interesantísimos animales. Es tal vez por esto, que existen tantos cuentos y mitos del coquí que en su mayoría son falsos, incorrectos y sin ningún fundamento científico. A medida que nuestras investigaciones nos permitan aumentar el conocimiento que existe sobre los coquíes, compartiremos esa información no sólo con la comunidad científica, sino también con el público en general. Los coquíes son una parte muy importante de las cadenas y pirámides alimentarias y se consideran los depredadores nocturnos más importantes en Puerto Rico.  Nuestros estudios, que son dirigidos a la protección y la conservación de los coquíes son especialmente necesarios en este momento, cuando la disminución poblacional de muchos de ellos se hace evidente.

The coquíes of Puerto Rico are important for ecological and cultural reasons. The coquí is the symbol of Puerto Rico both outside and inside the Island. For Puerto Ricans, they are an important part of our natural and cultural heritage. However, the average Puerto Rican knows very little about these very interesting animals. That may be the reason for so many tales and myths about the coquí most of them being false, incorrect or without scientific fact. As our research allows us to increase the existing knowledge about coquíes, we will share that information not only with the scientific community , but with the general public . The coquíes  are a very important part of the food chain and are considered the most important noctural predator in Puerto Rico. Our studies - directed to the protection and the conservation of the coquíes- are specially necessary at this moment, when the diminishing population of many of them has become evident.
 

La  misión del Proyecto Coquí es conservar la biodiversiada y los lugares de importancia ecologica mediante investigación científica, educación y asesoramiento.  Utilizando a los coquies como bioindicadores, se puede determinar el estado de la salud de los ambientes donde estas especies viven.

The Project Goals are:

1. Study the populational fluctuations of the species of coquí that inhabit the forests of Puerto Rico, and determine the biotic and abiotic factors that affect this fluctuations
    
2. Find existing populations of coquíes that are threatened or in danger of extinction Coquí Dorado, Coquí Palmeado, Coquí de Eneida, Coquí Martillito, Coquí Caoba, Coquí Guajón. At the same time, evaluate the ecological conditions of the habitat of these species in order to determine the possible causes of their declining population.
    
3. Study the ecology and the reproductive conduct of the species of coquíes of Puerto Rico.
    
4. Develop a program of environmental education to orient and exhort the public to a more active participation in the protection and the conservation of our wildlife and areas of ecological importance.
    
5. Make recomendactions to the state and federal agencies regarding the management and the conservation of the Island's natural resources.
