Mexicana/Norteña
The Norteño musicians of Los Tigres del Norte don't shy away from writing controversial songs. Their albums are increasingly outspoken about issues that affect the residents along the Mexican-American border. And yet, it's hard to reconcile the somber topics Los Tigres del Norte address with the buoyant style of their music. Here’s more from Public Radio International’s The World. Here’s some Norteno music with a techno twist: Nortec Collective, a group of 5 young musicians from Tijuana who perform a breed of music they call "nortec." Reggaetón has been brewing underground in barrio house parties since the early 1990's, when the style trickled over from Panama. This musical craze is a testosterone-driven style that mixes hip-hop, Jamaican dancehall reggae and such Carribbean rhythms as bachata, merengue and salsa.
Marco Werman, Senior Producer with Public Radio International’s The World, a one-hour, weekday radio news magazine offering a mix of news, features, interviews, and music from around the globe, recently spoke with two members of Reggaetón Niños. You can hear the interview, read its transcript, and dig some of their music at this link! |
